How Do I Create a Website?
How do I create a website? | What is FTP | How do I edit HTML
Chances are incredibly high that you have asked yourself those exact questions- which is why you have more than likely landed on this page. A big error on most beginner’s part is this: you should not be asking how do you make a website for free, instead the question you should be asking yourself is how do you make a website that will make you money?
First of all, I want to make something very clear here. No matter what anyone says, there is no such thing as completely free. Sure, you can get things for free, but there will always be something that will require a little bit of money, and to make your own website for free is no exception. At the end of this post, I will recommend (in my opinion) the best website builder for beginner or advanced internet marketers.
Let me break it down for you. You can create your own website by scratch for free (which by the way, unless you know html- this is not a quick and easy task) or, you can use a free html editor (I like SeaMonkey- and it is completely free), OR you can buy an html editor that has no limitations-they can do some pretty cool stuff. (If you’re just starting out, SeaMonkey is just perfect. I have used it for quite a while, and I am perfectly happy with it.)
Editors Note: An html editor is basically a program that you install onto your computer. You can then open existing files from your computer or start from scratch and edit the page just like you would a word document to be html code (in other words, internet friendly.) An html editor is excellent for people who don’t know or know very little about html.
Many people seem to think the “make your own website for free” question is the same as “how do you make a website”. The difference? You can make your own website for cheap, or you can hire someone to make it for you, not for cheap. Either way, it’s not free.
The next step in this “how do I create a website” outline is finding hosting. This is actually where you will spend money either way, and it’s where the not completely free comes in.
There are 2 constant charges when it comes to making your own website (you may only have to pay for one, though.)
1.) Purchase a domain name
You can usually buy one of these for $5-10 a year. Just do a Google search for purchase domain names, and you will find many companies you can chose from. I personally use Bluehost, but they are kind of expensive compared to others ($10 flat). I use them because they allow Paypal for purchasing the domain.
2.) Purchase Hosting
Yep, you have to buy this too. This is how your website is actually seen by others. If you don’t have a hosting account, you have no site. I also use Bluehost for this, because they are actually very cheap in this arena (only a few dollars a month), and their hosting account is very easy to use. (They also have a forum and training videos that help beginners.)
In some cases, if you purchase a domain name, you may get a free month of hosting, or if you purchase hosting, you may get a free domain name.
After you buy a domain name, and purchase hosting, the next step is editing your website. You can use templates (again, these can be free or you can pay for them!) or you can edit it by scratch (with an html editor.) After your website looks like you want it, you upload it to your server (upload it to your hosting account, basically. This is done in your cPanel, or you can do it by using an FTP client. I use Filezilla- this is also a free service.) If you are very new to website building, I recommend learning through your cPanel first, and then when you get a little more used to the process, then use an FTP client. FTP is much faster than using using your cPanel, but it can be tricky to get at first.
Editor’s Note: FTP is a program that is installed on your computer, with all of your websites’ login information (known as server, host, and username). Once you log into the software, you have access to all of your websites files. You can then upload or download (put on the web or take off) files quickly and efficiently. You can do multiple files at a time, where as in your cPanel you are limited to one file at a time. Another benefit to an FTP server is you can have ALL of your websites stored in the software for easy access, as opposed to logging in and out of your cPanel.
Okay, this post is getting a little long, so I’m going to wrap it up here. Now you know the basic steps of creating your own website, what you need to do it, and what an FTP client is.
I promised I would recommend the best website builder, and in my opinion it’s the best website builder because it’s fully automated. Now, if you’re looking to make a persoanl website, then this may not be for you. It’s called the Minute Sites. It’s a software that literally creates websites with just a few clicks of your mouse, and they are fully optimized and monetized and ready to upload to your server. (Remember, you know what that is now!)
